Between moral philosophy and epistemology: Epistemological vigilance in the qualitative researcher´s practice

Abstract
In the practice of qualitative research, we do not look for the absolute unknown, but for the ungraspable, the one that emerges from human relations. Therefore, we collect the other’s discourse and pretend to comprehend it, to then give an account of the phenomenon to our academic community. Yet, paradoxically, researchers do it within a culture that privileges not only an epistemological model that dismisses practical knowledge but also one that favors the assumption of a neutral and disengaged position. In light of this bias, for the sake of our work and of the parties committed to the study, our goal of recovering the value of incarnated knowledge —the one that emerges from the experience— should be our top priority. Hence to achieve this objective, we need to reflect on our epistemological stance and its ethical implications first. In other words, as researchers, we need to adopt a hermeneutic- phenomenological approach and the exercise of practical reasoning as well, that is, to promote the habit of epistemological vigilance.
